Water Fun at Baiyun Mountain

If Peach Blossom Brooklet doesn’t ring any bells, well, you’re not alone. I myself for years called this serene, picture-perfect mountain stream simply ‘The Stream’, because that’s what it is-one of many crystal clear streams flowing down the mountains at Baiyunshan. So what makes this one different? That it is a perfect place for young kids to splash around in shallow, fresh water!

Did I mention this fun would only set you back 5rmb, 15 yuan if you decide to take the EV? Bargain!

West Gate to Baiyun mountain is very busy so I suggest going early, especially on weekends and holidays; we’re talking 8-9am early, yes, really. To get to the stream, you can either walk all the way up to the first EV station/stop, come out, turn left and you’ll see a gate-go through it, carry on and congratulations, you made it!There are signs showing you the way to the brooklet from there but honestly, it’s hard to miss it.

You could also buy a ticket for the Electric Vehicle to take you there – purchasing a ticket is very straight forward, simply state the number of adults (Pinyin: da ren) and children (Pinyin: xiao hai)wanting to take the EV and mention kids’ height or if you’re not great with Chinese numbers, just show the child to the staff as children under 120cm go free but need to be sat on guardian’s lap unless there are empty spaces. Then you wait for the EV to arrive. Ensure you keep your ticket as the driver will check it. On busy days, you may have to wait for a long time for the EV so if you think your child can manage, just walk up, it shouldn’t take longer than 25min and it’s not very steep. EVs start operating from 7.30am.

Once you’re at the stream, there are a couple of benches where you can leave your things but no changing rooms or toilets (those are a bit further away) so chances are, you’ll see some naked kids around.

Peach Blossom Brooklet might be a natural mountain stream but this area was not designed by nature therefore, luckily for families with young kids, water is very shallow and the bottom though rocky (water shoes are a must) is safe. The area for kids is not big but trust me, your little one can still have hours of fun there.

The brooklet is mostly in the shade and the temperature feels significantly cooler there while the humidity seems to disappear altogether! You know those days when you feel you could fry an egg on the pavement in about a minute? That’s when you need to get yourself to this stream! You’ll immediately feel respite without a drop of sweat in sight. Needless to say, your kids will love playing there while you chill on a boulder.

WIN all around.

When kids had their fill of fun/your clothes are soaked because you’ve been splashed too many times, you can rest in the shade on spacious seats nearby. Naturally, there are paths and hiking trails all over so if you are so inclined, your family could explore this part of Baiyunshan further.

You could also walk back to the EV station and buy a separate ticket for another route taking you higher up the mountain (another 10rmb) -the staff should show you where to wait for the correct EV so as to avoid you incorrectly taking the EV, which is going back down to West Gate. If you’re anything like us though, after about 3 hours of water play you’ll need food and there are plenty of options.

Food: Picnics are always great and there are lawns near the stream, opposite the EV station (despite the signs saying ‘Keep off the grass’ the security guard had no problems with us picnicking so I say, go for it!) where you can eat and play.

There is also a restaurant across from the lawn, a really good one too with lovely views of the pond. If you fancy a Cantonese meal, walk down with the pond to your left and on your right you’ll see a pink wall-walk up the steps and you’ll find yourself in a popular restaurant.

If you’ve still got some energy left in you and hunger pangs are not bothering you, walk down the main road for 5-10min and on your left you’ll see a sign advertising yet another restaurant, located up a hill. I haven’t tried that one but heard the food was good.

Finally, there is a bakery at West Gate and a snack bar at Bee World if you’re really desperate and if you feel like a western meal, the Golden Ark/Anhuahui mall (McDonald’s, Pizza Hut, Dominos) is only a 10min drive away. There are also snack bars at the top of some mountain paths but I don’t recommend them.

Tips

In fact, there are many more places where adults can spend money as nowadays there is a convenience store and a fruit tea shop operating along the main road starting at West Gate. There are also a couple of tea houses, one private one near the entrance and one operated by Baiyun mountain, I believe, and serving tea grown within the attraction. We love this part of the mountain and will be coming back again and again so might see you there!

Have you been there before? Are there any other natural water play areas you’d recommend?
